By the looks of this image it seems as though he has only used one light source. It may either be a soft box or just window light. The postion of the camera looks as though its almost at level with the eggplant.

The lighting on the left hand image, looks as though its coming from directly above. The main light source in the second image is coming from the far back hand, the light area is so big i'm almost sure its window light.

Things that I learn that day-
- MUST USE A LONGER FOCAL LENGTH LENS!!!! to reduce distortion
- Dont set up little play grounds.
- kiss (keep it simple stupid)
- try to use 3 or 2 key elements.
- fresh ingredients work a treat
- I already knew the technique of whats in the background sets the scene. This idea was just reinforced even more. rustic wooden chopping board is in a small country home kitchen or that chop sticks on some dinky table is a place in asia
- At the moment their is a trend with the images being "darker". This is because the plain "white" look is so simple and boring.
My images from the day-
The use of a small reflector just to bounce a little more light on the right hand side.
with no reflector, I personally feel its juts a little to dark on the right hand side. One way I tried shooting the carrots was with more emphasis on the leaves but i feel it wasn't effective.julians suggestions of opening the garlic up, adding a bit more depth and colour.
yumo! I tried shooting the pie not cut open but it looked so simple and plane. By carefully cutting a circle and scooping some stuff out it made the image a whole lot better. I also used some makeshift greenery herbs, carrot leaves haha.

Nice job Alex, great light and carrots.
